Materials
6 x sheets of A4 160gsm thin card.
Trimmings (narrow organza ribbon, two fancy beads, 4 Flora Doodles).
Sticky stuff (Double sided tape or Collall glue and silicone glue).
Joanna Sheen Eastern Treasures CD.
Optional cutting aid – Nestabilities Standard Circles Large – third largest circle from set.
Print out three copies of your chosen circle toppers and three copies of matching backing sheets (I printed two dark and one light coloured backing sheet). Cut out the middle sized circles, there are three on each topper sheet (total nine circles), and cut six circles (use one of the circles cut from the topper as a template) from two of the backing sheets + one extra circle. The pomander is made up of 20 circles alternating the circle toppers and backing circles. Save the remaining circles and backing sheet for Part II of the project.
Step One
Firstly you must make the template for the triangle needed to mark the position of the score lines. I have included templates for all the middle sized circles on the CD and for those who cut their circles using the third largest circle of the Nestabilities Standard Circles Large. (See picture 1). My printer does not do edge to edge printing and there may be a slight variation in the size of your circles, from mine. You will have to adjust the size of the triangle (which must have sides of equal length) to fit within the circle topper. (See pic. 2 images A B & C).
Cut out nine of the middle sized toppers, and 13 toppers from the backing sheets. You will have two extra circles.
Make your template needed to score the fold lines for the circles, choosing the template above your chosen topper. (See picture 1).
Cut a rectangle: -
62mm x 53mm - for images and nestabilility circle on left.
66mm x 57mm - for centre image.
60 mm x 52mm - for image on right.
Mark the centre point of one of the longest (top) edge and draw a diagonal line to each of the bottom corners. Cut out your triangular template.
NB to make the circles easier to see, for some of the images I have used blank or coloured card.
Step Two
Check your triangular template fits inside your circle as shown by circle “C” in picture opposite. The segments of the circle outside the triangle should be of equal size. Adjust the size of the triangle if necessary.
Wrong side facing, centre the triangle on the circle and mark the three points where it touches the edge of the circle – shown by red dots. (See image “D”). I line up two circles and mark them together using a pokey tool.
Score between the red dots to create an inner triangle surrounded by three segments and with right side facing crease upwards. (See image “E”).
Apply double sided tape or glue to the underside of one of the segments of the circle. I used Collall glue. (See image “F”).
Step Three
Join two circles together by matching the segments. When assembled they should look like pieces of a pie (points to the centre). (See image “A”). The segments will form an up stand. Alternate the colours of your circles as you join them.
Join the next circle to the first two, keeping the point to the centre. (See image “B”).
Repeat until all five circles have been joined. The fifth circle will have double sided tape on two of the segments. (See image “C”).
I prefer to use Collall photo glue as I can make adjustments. I secure with paperclips until the glue dries.
When dry attach the Flora Doodles, bead and double hanging ribbon (See last picture “A”) through the centre top of the five circles – I used a crochet hook. This will be the top section of the pomander. I used silicone glue and sellotape on the underside.
Step Four
Matching up the segments, join five circles to the segments on the outer edge of the top section just completed. This is shown by black circles in the picture opposite
NB For photographic purposes, this picture shows the pomander with the last circle of the top section unglued.
Step Five
Matching the segments attach a circle between each of the black segments (See the red arrows on picture above). The circle should be attached with the pointed side pointing upwards and be glued on two sides. This is shown by green circles on the picture opposite.
Step Six
This picture shows the inside of the pomander looking down. The ribbon will have been secured to the centre. The base of the pomander will be fixed to the five green segments.
Step Seven
Make up the base of the pomander as previously shown in Step 3. This picture is shown with paperclips waiting for glue to dry.
